Moreover, Chief Yarbrough
was one of thirty-nine successful black men throughout the United States
featured in the nationally acclaimed book, Face Forward: Young African
American Men In A Critical Age.
This book was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Chief Yarbrough was
presented the 2007 Best Teacher Award for excellence in the classroom. He
was recognized
by
the Student Alumni Connection, the Alumni Association and
Colorado State University in February 2007. Also,
he was
nominated in 2006
and 2007 for the prestigious Judge Conrad Ball Award. This award is given to
those
who have
significantly contributed toward improving the quality of
criminal justice in Larimer County. In May
2007, Chief
Yarbrough was
presented an award from the Fort Collins Police Services for his outstanding
efforts and cooperation
in law enforcement partnerships.
According to Chief Yarbrough, "I am ultimately responsible for the operation of the Department of Public Safety. I do not take this responsibility lightly. I am committed to making the community safer for those enhancing their education and for those that work here. I expect this same commitment from my officers and civilian personnel as well. I assure you that we are working hard to provide the principles of customer service, problem solving, prevention and shared responsibility with the community that are so critical to its strength and cohesion. Working together, hand in hand, I know that we can be successful!"

CSU Police Chief Dexter Yarbrough heads the Department of Public Safety as Associate Vice President for Public Safety. Prior to becoming the Chief of Police at Colorado State University, he was the Chief of Police at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside for 3 years. Before that, he was a decorated member of the Chicago Police Department for 15 years, having served in a number of very important and highly sensitive assignments.
Chief Yarbrough
is a 1987 graduate of Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of
Science in Law Enforcement Administration and he earned a Master of
Public
Administration degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology
in May 2000. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree at
Colorado
State University. In addition, he has attended the
Northwestern
University Center for Public Safety and a number of other specialized
trainings.
In November 1995, Illinois Governor Jim Edgar appointed Chief Yarbrough to a six-year term as a trustee at Western Illinois University . He was the youngest person and only law enforcement officer appointed to a major public university governing board in Illinois. During his term, he was elected as Board Secretary and Vice Chairperson of the Board. Chief Yarbrough completed his term in January 2001. He also served a five year term as a Board member for the State Universities Civil Service System which monitors civil service positions at state universities and other agencies throughout Illinois.
Chief Yarbrough was a
1997/1998 Fellow in the highly competitive
Leadership Greater Chicago
Fellows
Program and was elected to its
Board of Directors. He was the first member
of the Chicago Police
Department selected for the program in its 20 year history.
